The Guntur Sannam Chili is a Capsicum annuum variety of chili pepper from India that produces 5-15cm long fruit with thick red skin that have a Scoville rating of 35,000 to 40,000 units (similar to Cayenne which is rated at 30,000 - 50,000 SHU). Guntur Sannam is one of the most famous types of chiles and a significant commercial crop in India. It is used in curries or dried into a powder. Plants require a warm, humid climate and can be grown in containers in less temperate regions.

What are growing degree days?

A plant grows with warmth, not with days. A growing degree day is one day's worth of useful warmth: how many degrees the day's average temperature is above the lowest temperature the crop grows at. Add them up from planting and you know how far along the crop is, whatever the calendar says.
