Ponsonby Red Tomato
Solanum lycopersicum
A variety of tomato
A New Zealand heritage tomato with medium, round, very red fruit in long bunches and huge production of even, good-tasting fruit. A stand-out for organic greenhouse production. Sent in 2000 by an Auckland gardener who bought it at a market on Ponsonby Road. Needs staking. Sow in trays in late September, prick out at 3 cm, pot on at 10 cm and plant out at 10 to 15 cm high at 50 cm spacing, two rows per 1 m bed.
