HELIANTHUS : SUNFLOWER When to Sow ~ Spring or Summer. Where to Grow ~ In a well-drained site in full sun. How to Sow ~ For best results, the temperature during germination should be between 18-25°C. Germination should occur in 7-10 days. At a lower temperature, germination will be slower but more uniform. Care ~ Seedlings should be grown on at 20-25°C. Keep seedbed evenly moist during germination period. Taller varieties will benefit from staking or support. Dwarf varieties will benefit from the removal of spent flowers, which will promote lateral branching and more flowers. Tips ~ F1 Hybrid varieties will flower all year round so long as they remain in a temperature higher than 18°C, without a glasshouse or similar this will not be possible. Rats and mice will eat Helianthus seed from the seedbed. Also beware of slugs and snails, as they love to eat the leaves of the emerging seedlings. For your interest Helianthus sown in spring may grow to 6ft tall. The same seed, sown in late autumn (short days) will flower at 2ft tall and stop growing. Common name is Sunflower, Germination Guaranteed ‘se Egmont Seed Company Ltd | _ PO Box 674, New Plymouth 4340, New zealand ~ mailorder@egmontseeds., 'w.egmontseeds.co.nz
