BEAN : SCARLET RUNNER Do not plant until’all danger of frost has passed. The most common cause of poor germination is sowing too early when temperatures are not warm enough. When to Sow ~ Spring or Early Summer. Where to Grow ~ Grow in a sheltered, well-drained site in full sun. How to Sow ~ Plant in a well prepared seedbed. Space seed 20cm apart, 3cm deep, in rows 150cm apart. Care ~ Keep seedbed evenly moist during germination period. Provide support in the form of netting, trellis, strings or poles to allow beans to grow to maximum potential. Tips ~ Keep well watered, but water during the morning to allow plants to dry off before nightfall, this reduces the risk of disease. With regular picking you increase both, total yields and length of harvest period. Sow small amounts 2-3 times throughout the growing season to extend your supply, every 6 weeks would suit most gardeners. These beans are perennial, they will die off at season’s end, but will grow back next season. For the beans to grow back, leave the foliage to dry (die) off naturally as these leaves provide food reserves to be stored in the roots, ready for next year's early growth. Bumble bees assist in pollination. Cold or wet weather reduces bee activity and can result in flower-drop, with no pods forming. As the season warms up the problem seems to right itself.
