LETTUCE Lettuce really struggles to germinate at temperatures over 24°C as it goes dormant. If sowing in summer, choose an appropriate position to avoid these high temperatures. When to Sow ~ Spring, Summer & Autumn. Where to Grow ~ Lettuce prefer cooler conditions, grow in a well-drained site, part sun, part shade if possible. How to Sow ~ Sow in garden or trays for subsequent transplanting after frosts have ended. Spread seeds thinly in rows and cover to a depth of omm. Seedlings should emerge after 7-10 days. Keep seedbed evenly : moist during germination. Care ~ Once your seedling has 3 or more leaves, transplant until big enough to plant out. Garden spacing should be approximately 30cm. If you have sown seed directly into the garden, thinnings can be transplanted to another spot. Lettuce prefer cooler temperatures of around 16-22°C, but warmer conditions can be tolerated with a steady moisture supply. Typical days from sowing to harvest Butterhead Types : 55-65 days Frilly Types: 55-65 days Crisphead Types : 60-75 days Oak Leaf Types : 50-60 days These harvest dates are for mature plants.
