PUMPKIN : SQUASH When to Sow ~ Spring or Summer after all danger of frost has passed. Can be sown earlier indoors or under glass, but these plants must have both warmth and plenty of light. Germination will not occur in cold temperatures. Where to Grow ~ In a warm, sheltered, well-drained site in full sun. How to Sow ~ Sow 2-3 seeds 10cm apart, in groups 2 metres apart, or 1 seed per pot and cover with 20mm of firmed soil. Lay seed on it’s side when sowing. Do not push the seed into the'soil as this may block the small hole that the seed takes in water through (@ common catise of germination failure.) Care ~ Keep seedbed evenly moist during the germination period. Pumpkin and Squash generally require a long, warm season. Tips ~ Reducing fruit numbers to 3 or 4 per plant can hasten maturity and keep plants healthier (reduced stress due to fruit production.) Avoid getting foliage wet as this’can create fungal / mildew problems. Grey skinned Crown Pumpkins generally have exceptional shelf life. These should be left on the vine until full maturity (when foliage has died off.) The Pumpkin or Squash stem should be left on when harvesting (critical for even short term storage.) Buttercup, Butternut and other Squash generally do not store as well, but 2 or 3 months minimum is usually expected. Germination Guaranteed Egmont Seed Company Ltd. PO Box 674, New Plymouth 4340, New Z AIL ~ matlorder@egmontseeds.
