PermalinkLet's get this ball rolling! I notice there are a lot of antipodeans (mostly Melbournians, ahem, wonder why that is?) signed up so far, so I'd like to know… what are you planning on growing over the winter?
We have some chard that's still going strong from the summer, but I think I'll plant some more because you can hardly have too much. I'm going to try kale again (got a couple of varieties) even though they got eaten by something last year within days of planting out seedlings. Beetroot, definitely (got two kinds, will try not to mix them up with chard this year). Some asian greens (bok choy and choy sum). Some spinach. Oh, and celeriac, because why not? We would probably be more likely to eat it than celery, and we can use the tops for making stock (which is about the only thing we usually buy celery for anyway).
I think that's about it. How about you?

I've got an autumn fruiting raspberry which is pleasing me greatly. Mostly I'm focussing on herbs (have rosemary and am about to plant thyme, thinking sage and parsley and maybe mint if I can get a moist enough spot.)
Beyond that, bok choy, globe artichokes. I'll put in leeks in late winter. Next year I'll think ahead and plant garlic. I've got some beetroot seeds, will try those. I'm just starting out and trying to improve soil quality, so I'll see how to go. Have I missed the boat on Broccoli?
I'll be planting garlic and onions (now that I know what I did wrong with onions last time I tried planting them), some peas (different garden bed), bok choy, carrots, coriander, turnips and spinach.
bluebec, may I ask what it was you were doing wrong with the onions last time? (Just so I can avoid it if/when I try to grow them!)
I'm planting things in a few waves. I've just moved little seedlings of kale (blue, red, cavolo nero), broccoli (purple sprouting, di cicco), herbs (coriander, parsley, dill, tarragon), sorrel and rocket outside. They got replaced in the indoor seedling trays on the weekend with seeds of spinach, silverbeet, cime di rapa, white mustard, leaf turnip and dandelion. I'm waiting on some new seeds to arrive, which will get planted in a couple of weeks: broad beans, corn salad, purslane, miner's lettuce, borage, methi and chervil.
I'm also planning on putting a raised bed on top of our one in-ground garden bed. Everything I've grown in containers over the last couple of seasons has done better than the plants in the ground, which just isn't right. So I'm looking forward to making that over the next couple of weeks and letting it settle in time to put a lot of these winter plants in.
I was supposed to get my garlic in yesterday but didn't, will happen soon! Lots of broad beans going in on the weekend and I'll underplant some with fenugreek (from the spice rack, it's getting on a bit so I'll just chuck it in and see) and some with purslane transplanted from the lawn. Some brassica seedlings to go in.
In the other garden I've just divided up some globe artichokes which are looking horribly sad and I'm worried about them. Planted coriander, dill, spring onions on the border and some lettuces too.
Oh, and hi Meg, fancy seeing you here :)
So far I've planted out as much Garlic, Carrots and Onions as one of our 1m * 2m garden beds can handle. And I've sprinkled in Bok Choi for good measure. We seem to go through that stuff so quickly. Hoping I can keep up with our consumption at some point.
The other garden bed had Broad Beans, Peas, Kale and Spinach. The Broad Beans and Peas are doing great, the other stuff is growing rather slowly.
I've also got some Onion seedlings started, but haven't worked out where to put them.
Hi lovely Zoe :) I was hoping to see you here!
I'm planting a coconut tree! Also some herbs (dill, Thai basil, and thyme), garlic, and beetroot for winter stews. Will also be purchasing some more Venus fly traps to guard my noms against hungry insects.
