PermalinkI'm currently trying to decide what to plant next, as some of my current flowers die back. I have planter boxes and a few small flowerpots on the balcony. The rosemary is doing well, but I'd like some vegetables, as I use those far more often than herbs. I have no idea what I'm doing, though. It's semi-shade (west-facing), and I'd like things that don't need too much TLC. What can I grow in the northern hemisphere at this time of year?

Chard! Chard chard chard! Grows year round, doesn't mind partial shade, is cut-and-come-again, and can be used in all sorts of stuff (including just sauteing it with a little garlic). It'll grow easily from seed (you can eat the thinnings as salad leaves) and doesn't even need particularly good soil (mine does fine in 2-3 year old potting mix with a little sprinkle of compost on top).
Chard does do very well. All year round lettuce is also good. I always plant "green onion" in semi shade. Where I am, when you buy it, it comes in a big bunch and we never use the whole lot. Planting it keeps them ultra fresh, much much better than in the fridge.
Chard, and collard greens would be my suggestions.
