Amaranthus spp.

A variety of amaranth

How to sow pygmy torch amaranth: Direct seed, thin seedlings to 15cm

Sun requirement for pygmy torch amaranth: Plant in Full Sun

A grain amaranth from Hawke's Bay that stays about 1 m tall, so it is easier to net against birds than taller types. It has deep burgundy leaves and large drooping burgundy-black seed heads, and the popped seed is black and white and crunchy. It works as an ornamental too. Sow October to early November and transplant at 5 cm high, 50 cm apart on the diagonal.
